Miles Magister Mk I

Training aircraft By: Miles Aircraft Origin: United Kingdom First Flight: 1937

About This Aircraft

The Miles Magister Mk I was a British two-seat monoplane basic trainer aircraft. Affectionately nicknamed the "Maggie," it was the first monoplane designed specifically as a trainer to enter service with the Royal Air Force. Constructed primarily of wood, the Magister features an open, tandem-cockpit layout and is powered by a de Havilland Gipsy Major I engine. It played a crucial role in the expansion of the RAF before and during the early years of the Second World War, preparing pilots for combat in Hurricanes and Spitfires. This example, with the serial T9708, is painted to represent a different aircraft, T9707. The Magister's introduction was a vital step in modernising the RAF's training programme.
